Basic Sciences
Basic science focuses on understanding underlying fundamental principles behind various phenomena and providing useful knowledge for the future developments. This year, we aim to bring together Korean and European scientists working in various fields of Basic Science, strengthen the networks and keep up-to-date with the latest developments. To this end, Basic Sciences Group will focus on the following sessions at EKC2017. Poster session: In this session, delegates from all research area of Basic Sciences (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth science, etc.) are invited to present their own research works and topics, learn each other’s expertise, develop networks and find potential collaboration partners. Talk sessions: In the talk sessions, delegates will discuss the current main issues and new developments in the selected research area (listed below) with the experts and key persons in the field. o Photonics o Application of innovative technologies in Geoscience & Geotechnical Engineering In addition, delegates are also encouraged to participate in the sessions of their own interests organized by other Science & Technology Groups. In particular, Bio Sciences and Health Group co-organizes six special sessions on “Convergence Science and Technology for Human Health” in collaboration with Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and two sessions on "Aging mechanisms" with the IBS Center for Plant Aging Research. Note also that Material Science and Technology Group co-organizes session(s) on “Nano-materials” with the IBS Center for Nanoparticle Research. Through these events, organizers of EKC2017 wish to provide a comprehensive opportunity for Korean & European scientists to establish valuable and prolonged network.

Innovative Technologies are already being applied for many industries, and Geoscience & Geotechnical Engineering field is no exception. Geoscience is comprised of Geology, Geophysics, Seismology, Hydrology, Geochemistry, Geodesy, Geomagnetism, Petroleum Geology, Engineering Geology, Soil Science, Atmospheric Sciences, etc., and Geotechnical Engineering includes Geotechnical Investigation, Tunneling, Mining, Foundations Design, Infrastructures, Ground Improvement, Petroleum Engineering, Slope stability, and etc. As such, Geoscience & Geotechnical engineering field are covering diverse subjects and very closely related to human’s life. Innovative technologies provide accurate and efficient data. For example, using the state-of-the-art technology like InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar), LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), engineers can monitor and detect displacement of landslides, settlements and sinkholes caused by construction, earthquake, or heavy rainfall in real time. And also, development of new method/approach on this field will be introduced in this session.

Studies on the interaction between light and structure material (photonics) have been at the center of physics studies, their outcome opening breakthrough chances for various new applications in optical communications, displays, quantum information technologies, etc. In EKC 2017, we would like to have a session dedicated to photonics for the first time, connecting researchers in Europe and Korea (covering academia and research institute as well as industries). The subject includes optoelectronics, silicon photonics, plasmonics, nanophotonics, quantum photonics, and methodology for photonics.
